Volkswagen MQB platform to soldier on through two more generations – report

The Volkswagen group’s widely used ‘MQB’ modular architecture will reportedly soldier on for at least another two generations of the group’s models.

Speaking to German newspaper Boersen-Zeitung, Herbert Diess, the company’s brand chief, said the component set can still be used for a long time.

“In the past months we have worked on the cost side of MQB and made significant progress,” he said. “The MQB has high technical substance, so we can use it for the next two vehicle generations without further major investments.”

It appears this latest development is another means of cutting costs for the German giant following the recent Dieselgate emissions saga.

MQB underpins a number of Volkswagen Group models across several brands, including the small Golf, medium/large Passat and mid-sized Tiguan, the Audi A1, A3, Q2 and Q3, along with the Skoda Fabia, Octavia and Superb.

The big new Atlas SUV is also built on MQB, making it the largest model on the platform yet.
