ThiEYE i60 4K Review: A“GoPro Killer” action camera
by Nicola 160 Views
Nowadays people is into action cameras. Whether you take it on your helmet to a ride on your motorcycle, or in your dog’s collar to film from his perspective. It seems to be no limit for these little and ingenious devices. Most people know that the GoPro camera is the one that dominates this market. But today we’ll be reviewing a new competitor, an action camera that goes by the name of ThiEYE i60 4k, which aims to provide the same amount of features and quality of a GoPro camera, but at a much more affordable price.
ThiEYE i60 4K: quality construction and design
The ThiEYE 4k i60 looks more or less like any other action camera ever seen; small, square, and has a few buttons on it. This model comes with a built-in 1.5-inch screen, making easy to frame the shots to be performed. The screen automatically turns off after a minute, so you will not have to worry about battery drain.
On the front side, right next to the lens you have the power button, which also allows you to scroll through the different modes of the camera. Next to them, you have two buttons to navigate the menus and enable Wi-Fi.
At the top, there is a single button to start recording video or taking a picture.
Finally, on the opposite side, there is a slot for a micro SD card, a Micro-USB port, and an HDMI output.
The i60 ThiEYE 4k has a textured surface, so it does not slip out of your hands if being held properly during filming.
This action camera comes in a very safe waterproof housing that can be used up to 40m under water. It’s easy to open and close and the hatch won’t open if the camera is dropped accidentally (as long as the camera is properly sealed). There are also a number of mounts and accessories included with the package, but you also have the option to purchase additional accessories separately, such as a bicycle mount and chest harness. If you already have GoPro accessories there is no need to spend more money, this camera is compatible with most of them if not all.
ThiEYE i60 4K: specifications
This edition of the ThiEYE camera is the 4k version and is able to capture both videos and photos at 4k resolution. Unfortunately, 4k video is recorded at 15-20fps, which makes the video appears quite choppy during playback. It also records to 2.74k at 30fps, [email protected]/30fps, and [email protected]/120fps. You’ll have to use a high-speed microSD card to use all recording modes available, so we recommend a class 10 card or better.
ThiEYE i60 4K: video recording
To test the i60 4K we mainly used the camera in 1080p mode at 60 FPS and 4K, as it provides a great balance between softness and quality. When used as a dash cam it is preferable to have the camera configured so that it can maintain focus with fast-moving objects (like cars, for instance).
The quality of the videos in 1080p at 60 FPS is decent. It was used mainly as a dash cam, and during such tests, the camera performed well. There was enough detail to identify the license plates of vehicles and street signs when traveling at a reasonable speed.
The close objects have a good level of details while filming, but the quality decreases as you move away. The colors are accurate, and the ThiEYE i60 4Kseems to do a good job adjusting to lighting changes. With a little more detail, it could be a much more enjoyable article, but it serves its purpose just fine.
ThiEYE i60 4K: verdict
The ThiEYE i60 performs pretty well in 1080p mode, but when it comes to 4k it doesn’t quite live up to the GoPro. The video quality definitely needs improvement in order to beat its toughest competitors. The company qualifies this camera as a ‘Go Pro killer’, and this may have some merit. 1080p videos are much cleaner and better than their 4k counterparts, and features such as time lapse recording are easy to use. The accessory package allows you to configure it almost instantly, and it costs less than $80, wich makes it an excellent choice. If you are looking for a camera action that captures decent Full HD video without spending too much, then this camera could be perfect for you.
