Ten cars that flew off dealer lots in October
It was a bit of a flat sales month in October according the latest VFACTS data, a comprehensive CarAdvice dissection of which you can read here.
But there were a number of models that had massive sales success compared to October 2015, be it a result of discounting, marketing, updates/new-generation launches or a combination of each. Here are ten of the best.
Ford Ranger
The Australian-engineered workhorse was the nation’s second top-selling car after the Toyota HiLux last month, and was the number one 4×4 commercial in the country. Better for Ford, many of these were the expensive XLT and Wildtrak versions.
Total sales of 3217 units were up 620 units over the same month last year. Demand just isn’t slowing, and with the recent updates now in market, there’s little reason to predict a slowdown. Meantime, HiLux sales only grew by 13 units.
Honda Civic
We’ve greeted the newly launched Honda Civic sedan with plaudits. It even won its first comparison test against the highly fancied Hyundai Elantra.
The sales results are telling, with 811 units delivered (including a small number of the UK-made, previous-generation and soon-to-be-replaced hatch) in October. This is 372 more than October 2015.
Hyundai Accent
The price is right, at $14,990 drive-away. That’s why we included this spacious light car in our recent micro car test. The Accent isn’t a patch on the pricier and smaller Mazda 2 dynamically or stylistically, but for many buyers that’s not an issue.
The little Hyundai is easily the most popular car in its class now, and its October figure was 461 units more than October 2015’s tally.
Hyundai Tucson
The Tucson was a star in October, topping the medium SUV charts ahead of the Mazda CX-5 and Nissan X-Trail.
Its 1845 unit count was 1002 more than the same month last year, though the caveat is that Hyundai sold 1179 discontinued ix35s last October too… Still, a mean effort.
Kia Sportage
Another Korean medium SUV. The Kia Sportage is one of our favourites, as you can read here, with a great warranty, features list and cabin flexibility.
Wth 920 units sold last month, it leapt to the pointy end of the class, which is not something its predecessor (437 sales last October) could claim.
Mazda CX-9
We knew the recently launched new-generation Mazda CX-9 would make leaps over its predecessor, but its record-breaking figure of 863 units last month was up 260 per cent. It even beat the class champion, the Toyota Kluger (833).
Mazda may not have had a great October (down 7.2 per cent and in third place overall), but it can take solace from this figure.
Mercedes-Benz GLA
The pint-sized Benz crossover smashed its rivals (the BMW X1 and Audi Q3) in October with a massive 623 deliveries, thanks to strong campaign pricing and heavy advertising.
This figure is 180 per cent higher than what it managed in the same month last year, and it even outsold the C-Class sedan/wagon range (556) to be Mercedes’ top-selling car.
Mitsubishi ASX
The Mitsubishi ASX sells on price, but at $25,000 drive-away, it’s a sharp one. No wonder 1650 people bought one last month, more than the number who signed-up for a Mazda CX-3, Nissan Qashqai or Honda HR-V.
Growth of 52 per cent (1088 in October 2015) proved there’s life in the old dog yet (not meant as a slight).
Subaru XV
Another Japanese small crossover, the Subaru XV, had a boom month, even though a new generation of the badge is due next year.
Subaru sold 819 units thanks to campaign pricing, up from 543 this month last year.
LandCruiser wagon sales are up 31 per cent this year, growth almost as big as the cars themselves.
October’s result of 972 units is a stunning achievement, and compares well to the 715 sold last October.
