Coconut oil: How to effectively wash it out your hair

Make-up remover, hair mask and head-to-toe moisturiser – we simply can’t sing the praises of coconut oil enough.

Although we do have one issue with the vitamin-packed beauty must-have.

It’s pretty hard to actually rinse out of locks. That shower water just glides off our oily hair ends…

But with some insider know-hows, you can keep using this wonder hair mask to inject moisture into your tresses without permanently sporting the wet look.

After all, it is supposed to be the secret behind Blake Lively enviable locks...

Just LOOK at that hair!

Hair expert Sean Nolan, Wella Technician and Stylist, advises you invest in a product build-up removing shampoo.

He said: “In order to remove Coconut Oil from your hair you need a strong cleansing shampoo such as System Professional Purify Shampoo (RRP £18.25) to remove excess oil on the scalp and mid lengths and end.”

And when washing it out, he advised shampooing all the way to the ends (as oppose to just the roots of your hair) and repeating the cleanse twice on the tips of your hair.

“Really work the shampoo through your hair before rinsing. If you still feel that the hair is coated, go for a third shampoo but rest assured the benefits of the oil have still worked their way into hair shaft and sealed the cuticle so you will not be shampooing the benefits away,” Sean said.

But what if you’ve tried that and you’re still oiler than Peter Andre’s abs in the Mysterious Girl video?

Or you’re mid-mask and not quite in the position to run out to buy specialist shampoo?

Well, here’s some home hair hacks that help strip away that excess grease to leave you with the soft, hydrated and glossy locks you were originally after.

Shampoo hair BEFORE rinsing it

After you’ve leave the mask on to work it's magic, rub your shampoo into your hair BEFORE you get wet it and rinse out.

Work the shampoo into the ends a minute or so before getting in the shower and this should allow it to attached to the oil and pull it away more effectively once you rinse.

All else fails?

Try washing coconut oil-drenched hair with... egg yolks!

As this issue is a real modern day dilemma, many people have taken to Reddit to discuss their tried and tested ways to rid hair of excess coconut oil. And egg yolks come up time and time again.

The protein-packed breakfast food contains enzymes that can help soak up excess oil. And hey, the protein will help strengthen your hair too!

Just before you hop in the shower, massage whisked egg yolk into hair on top of the coconut oil, then rinse the recipe out together in the shower.

Beauty school is turning more into cooking class, right?

But to get it right it the first place, it’s essential you apply it properly to your hair.

How to apply a coconut hair mask properly
  • Buy 100% coconut oil, ideally virgin and cold pressed for the best results
  • Only apply on the ends of your hair that actually need a moisture boost - not roots to end
  • Meaning, if you're hair isn't naturally parched, brittle or damaged, you might not need the intensive treatment at all
  • Don’t over-do it. A tablespoon for long-locks is more than enough. Adjust accordingly for shorter hair
  • Only do the intensive treatment once every few weeks to avoid weighing hair down.
