2017 Holden Astra gets five-star ANCAP safety rating

The new 2017 Holden Astra has been awarded the full five-star safety rating from independent crash-testing authority ANCAP, ahead of its local launch later this month.

Awarded to the mid-spec RS and and top-shelf RS-V models, the rating is based on the tests conducted by Euro NCAP on the largely identical Opel Astra last year, and the fact that the two higher variants come equipped with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane support systems as standard equipment.

Meanwhile the entry-level R variant remains unrated.

Holden’s new small car also receives a ‘Good’ pedestrian safety rating, thanks to its top score in the front bumper test for its protection of pedestrians’ legs. Protection for the pelvic region was also rated as good.

James Goodwin, ANCAP’s CEO, said: “The new Astra will enter showrooms with a five-star ANCAP safety rating providing another new option for consumers in the competitive small car segment”.

Goodwin also emphasised the value of active safety systems.

“Real-world safety benefits are being achieved by these important safety technologies and we encourage consumers to choose a model with these technologies fitted,” he said.
