Volvo S90 Excellence, S90 L revealed in China
Swedish manufacturer Volvo has revealed two new versions of its S90 sedan aimed at the Chinese market, the uber-luxe S90 Excellence and long-wheelbase S90 L.
Both models will be built at the company’s manufacturing facility in Daqing, China, and exported globally.
Volvo says the new S90 models showcase the company’s credentials as a premium car maker.
The S90 Excellence is based on the long-wheelbase S90 L, and is built to satisfy the demands of wealthy Chinese customers who often prefer to be driven than drive themselves.
In place of a front passenger seat, the S90 Excellence is fitted with an infotainment system which also allows for more rear leg room.
Also standard on the top-shelf S90 is a panoramic roof, foldout work tables, a heated and cooled cup holder along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.
Both models will be available with Volvo’s CleanZone air filtration system – which features an ionic air cleaner to filter out particles passing into the cabin – in addition to autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with Large Animal Detection and Pilot Assist; which is a semi-autonomous mode that works at speeds of up to 130km/h.
Customers looking at the ‘lesser’ S90 L will have the choice of three powertrains, the 139kW T4, 187kW T5 and the 300kW T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Meanwhile, the S90 Excellence will only be made available with the T8 PHEV powertrain.
The S90 L goes into production this month, while the S90 Excellence will start rolling down the assembly line next year.
The new Chinese-built models are part of the company’s deepening cooperation with parent company Geely, which could see the Swedish marque the first western automotive manufacturer to mass-produce vehicles in China for global markets.
Last year, Volvo started exporting its Chinese-made S60 Inscription to the US – a first for the company.
Australia
Despite the company saying the Chinese-built S90 models will be “exported globally”, there has been no confirmation as yet whether the S90 Excellence and S90 L will join the Australian range – which only just launched – anytime soon.
CarAdvice has contacted Volvo Australia regarding local prospects for the new models, so stay tuned for an update.
