Goodis, founded in 2011, is a relatively new entrant from Portugal. The brand is into making fashionable accessories for smartphones, tablets, laptops and other portable devices. Today from Goodis we have their Cold Steel Headset for review.

Build and Design: 6.5/10
When I first saw these headphones they looked familiar. In fact, these look very much like Sennheiser Momentum’s design. A momentum-like design in an economically priced package, interesting!

The leatherette headband (PU leather) feel is good and certainly gives a premium feel to the headphone. The padding of headband and ear cup is sturdy, whereas in cheaper headphones this is the first thing to fall out.

Like many premium headphones, this budget friendly headphone comes with a detachable 3.5mm cable which can be swapped out for a different cable if you feel the necessity.

The Cold Steel’s have an inline remote which is a big plus, though it does use a slider for volume control and therefore cannot be as precise or smooth when moving volume up or down. Mechanical things like this are the first to get loose and spoilt overtime.

Overall, this 40mm driver headphone’s design is nice and light, unlike my heavy Audio Technica M-50s. However, the headphones are over-the-ear, so expect your ears to get compressed a bit. I personally prefer around-the-ear design for longer listening comfort.

In the package
The headphone comes with 6.3mm stereo Adaptor, a thoughtful Airplane jack adaptor and a nice velvet carrying pouch. Certainly a premium feel for headphones of this class.

Performance 6/10
Objectively: The headphones are on the bassy side. All sounds do have a more bass in it but are not overtly bassy unlike Sennheiser CX 3.00. The sound produced does lack clarity and refinement of better sets. You’ll feel the sound is muffled.

Subjectively: The headphones will definitely make your head bob and feet tap. My first reaction was “Hey, nice”, albeit with lesser clarity than I’m used to through headphones. When testing with other listeners everyone liked the sound, while some saying it was on the bassy side.

Everything has a general muddled sound, the mids, the highs lack the crisp clarity. However, the sound is easy to get used to when listening to causally.

When comparing with Sennheiser HD 180’s which cost under Rs 1,000, the Goodis aren’t as clear, however the Sennheiser’s need their bass pumped up to get punchy rocking sound out of them.

Call Quality: 6.5/10
The call quality is decent of these headphones. It does the job well and is great convenience to have when plugged in directly to one’s mobile.

Uh-Oh We’re In Trouble: After-sale’s support
The headphones after 3 weeks of intermittent usage unexpectedly developed a problem. The left ear cup started to give an issue of loose connection and then stopped functioning completely. After trying a different 3.5mm cable and applying WD-40, the issue wouldn’t get resolved. Unfortunately, the left ear cup of the headphone had already given up. That’s disappointing.

After speaking with the company representative, he assured me that this was the first issue of its kind and that after the problem is determined it would definitely be resolved, either repair or replacement. That’s reassuring.

Verdict and Price in India
For Rs 3,600, Cold Steel’s are a decent buy. Though you can get better sound from Kingston HyperX Cloud Core headset, but Cloud Core is headset with removal mic for PC gaming. However, when it comes to overall package, Goodis Cold Steel does make a compelling buy.

Go for these

  • If you want decent sound
  • If you like the Sennheiser Momentus styling
  • Light headphones
  • Premium feel
  • Don’t mind trying out new brands

Don’t go for these

  • Prefer clearer sound (a higher-end category may suit you better)
  • Prefer known headphone brands
